Highlights of Our Trip

1. Fun by the Lake

Lake Balaton offers more than just stunning views—it’s a playground for all ages. From swimming in its calm waters to relaxing on sandy beaches, every spot is well-equipped with shaded seating, updated playgrounds, outdoor gyms, and volleyball courts.

Insider Tip: Visit during the shoulder season (late September to November) for free beach access and tranquil, crowd-free experiences.

2. Hidden Hiking Gems

One of our favourite discoveries was Vadlánlik Cave – Szép Kilátás – Festetics Viewing Tower, an old stone quarry reclaimed by nature. It’s perfect for adventurous hikes, with meadows, towers, and challenging paths. Don’t forget water, snacks, and a reliable map for this off-the-beaten-path adventure.

3. Pottery Fun

Hungarian pottery is steeped in tradition, and we found a charming Pottery House where we tried our hand at crafting. The friendly owner guided our kids with enthusiasm, proving that art transcends language barriers.

4. Thermal Bliss at Hévíz

Hévíz boasts the world’s largest biologically active natural medicinal water. Soaking in the 40°C thermal lake was the perfect remedy after days of exploring.

5. Wildlife Wonders at Festetics Állatpark

This wildlife park was a hit with our kids, who loved feeding the animals and experiencing an unforgettable Halloween event. From tarantula handling to spooky trails, it was far more thrilling than any Halloween we’ve had in the UK.

6. BoBo Fun Park

If you’re travelling with kids, BoBo Fun Park is a must-visit. This ultimate indoor adventure hub features obstacle courses, trampolines, laser tag, and more. Next time, we’re staying at the on-site hotel (Kolping Hotel and Spa Family Resort) for unlimited park access—it’s every child’s dream come true.

Where to Eat: Our Favourite Spots

  • Tompos Restaurant: A fantastic variety of dishes, paired with live Hungarian music every Sunday lunchtime.
  • Pöttyös Bögre Kávézó és Reggeliző: Dubbed “the gingerbread house cafe” by our kids, this cosy spot serves delicious breakfasts and oozes charm.
  • Mónisüti Cukrászda: Perfect for coffee, cake, and relaxation, complete with toys to entertain little ones.

Hungary is brimming with delightful eateries, but these stood out for their unique charm and family-friendly atmosphere.
