Top 5 UK Holiday Destinations

Planning a UK holiday? These top destinations combine adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty, offering something for everyone.

Looking for the perfect UK getaway but unsure where to go? Here’s our list of top destinations, packed with charm, adventure, and relaxation.

As a family who loves to seize every opportunity to travel, we’ve found that staying within the UK can be just as exciting as heading abroad. No airports, no jet lag—just incredible landscapes, cosy accommodations, and the bonus of reliable WiFi for work and homeschooling. Oh, and our creepy crawlies are definitely smaller than those abroad!

Here are our top 5 UK destinations (in no particular order). Scotland didn’t make this list only because we haven’t visited as a family yet—but trust us, it’s high on our bucket list!

1. Devon

We might be biased as this is where we’ve chosen as our home base, but Devon never fails to feel like a holiday. With its stunning beaches, rugged moors, quaint pubs, and cosy cafes, it offers endless options for adventure and relaxation.

Highlights:

  • Miles of coastline with beaches that vary dramatically between the north and south.
  • The South West Coast Path for incredible hikes, with plenty of spots to rest or grab a bite.
  • Family-friendly attractions like zoos, aquariums, and theme parks.

If we had to pick one spot for a short getaway, it’d be Woolacombe. The beach is stunning, with great surf and charming nearby towns. There’s accommodation for all budgets Booking.com is usually our go to.

2. Cornwall

Our neighbouring county feels slightly wilder than Devon but just as magical. The beaches are pristine, and the cafes? Maybe even better (dare I say it!). Cornwall is perfect for mini-breaks, whether you visit in summer or during the quieter shoulder seasons.

Our Favourites:

  • Check out some of the amazing places Cornwall Hideaways have to offer.
  • Bude, Kynance Cove, Lizard Point, and Tintagel —each offering its own charm, coastal path, beaches and even a castle For a complete change of scenery we headed to Deerpark for amazing forest walks, a visit to the Eden project or for the more adventurous head to adrenaline quarry.
  • A mix of accommodations, from camping and glamping to cosy cottages and forest retreats.

Tip: Avoid high season if you can—Cornwall can get quite busy!

3. Isle of Wight

From the moment you step aboard the hovercraft in Southampton or take a scenic ferry ride, the Isle of Wight feels like an adventure waiting to happen. The journey itself sets the tone, and as soon as you arrive, there’s an unmistakable holiday feel.

Must-Do Activities:

  • Stroll through Cowes: A dream for boat enthusiasts, this charming town is packed with maritime history, quirky shops, and waterfront views.
  • Ride the chairlift at The Needles: Soar above the cliffs and get breathtaking views of the iconic chalk stacks and shimmering waters below.
  • Explore the island’s treasures: From golden beaches and lush parks, crazy golf to quaint/themed cafés and fossil-rich sites, there’s something for everyone.

Why Stay Here:
Accommodation is surprisingly budget-friendly compared to the mainland, with options ranging from cosy cottages to beachfront hotels. Wherever you stay, you’re never far from the island’s countless attractions.

The Isle of Wight truly offers a blend of adventure, relaxation, and discovery—perfect for a family getaway.

4. Brecon Beacons, Wales

Crossing into Wales, the Brecon Beacons offer a quieter alternative to the Lake District (which we love and would be in my top 10), with fewer tourists and just as much charm. There’s also many quirky budget friendly places to stay. Check them out here: Brecon Beacons Places to Stay

Top Picks:

  • Pen y Fan: Take the less crowded and more adventurous horseshoe route, including Pen Y Fan, Fan y Big, Corn Du and Cribyn.
  • Waterfall Trails: Accessible and perfect for kids.
  • Join a caving or gorge walking group for an unforgettable adventure.

From Brecon, you’re just a short drive to Cardiff for a dose of Welsh culture and history. Don’t miss St Fagans National Museum of History and the Big Pit National Coal Museum—both are free, educational and fun for all ages!

5. Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park

During our trip, we based ourselves in Caernarfon, a charming town with a historic castle, scenic parks, and great food. We stayed in The Celtic Royal Hotel which was central to exploring everything and not far to drive to Eryri’s breathtaking landscapes, we started each day with a delicious breakfast, then after exploring all day we loved coming back to a warm room, a swimming pool and a jacuzzi. The rooms are slightly dated, but overall the hotel was budget-friendly and was a great base. If you are after a fancier stay there are so many great places to choose from: Browse here.

Our Experience:

  • Our kids’ first mountain hike was here (at ages 2 and 4!). They even braved the winter chill with smiles.
  • For less strenuous adventures, there are stunning coastal trails and a train that takes you near the summit of Snowdon.
  • After a day outdoors, cosy up at one of the area’s many welcoming eateries.

Our eldest still talks about this trip—it was that memorable!

Take a Break, You Deserve It

The UK is full of incredible places to explore, and these five destinations are just the start. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both, there’s something for everyone.

So why wait? Book your next holiday, step outside, and enjoy the beauty right on your doorstep. You won’t regret it!
