5 Family Travel Destinations to Inspire Your Next Adventure

Struggling to pick the perfect family destination? Here are our Top 5 destinations.

Whether you’re planning a short getaway or a year-long adventure, finding a spot that balances excitement, safety, and kid-friendly fun can be tricky. After years of travelling and a memorable family gap year, we’ve uncovered five destinations that we loved and can’t wait to share. Each offers a mix of adventure, culture, and family-friendly vibes.

Let’s dive into our top picks!

1. Montenegro

Why We Loved It:

  • Majestic mountains and tranquil lakes
  • Thrilling adventures like kayaking, ziplining, and white-water rafting
  • Unbeatable value for money
  • Warm, welcoming locals
  • A rich cultural experience

We spent seven weeks in Montenegro, splitting our time between the mountains and the coast. The scenery is breathtaking. Think towering peaks, serene lakes, and hidden gems at every turn. Our kids loved kayaking and paddleboarding, while ziplining and rafting gave us our fill of adrenaline.

One highlight was meeting a local family who invited us to stay in their home. We shared meals, learned about their culture, and even helped out on their farm. Montenegro is truly a hidden gem, with locals who adore children (expect playgrounds at almost every café). Leaving was so sad for all of us, it’s a place we’ll never forget.

2. Croatia

Why We Loved It:

  • Island hopping and boat rides
  • Crystal-clear swimming spots
  • A mix of nature and history
  • Clean, safe, and family-friendly
  • Generous locals who adore kids

Croatia was a dream! 10 weeks of coastal exploration and island adventures. Each island felt like a mini-vacation, offering unique experiences and hidden beaches. We extended our stay several times because there was always more to discover.

A special memory was spending time with a local family who shared their homegrown produce and took us to a secret swimming spot. The kids couldn’t get enough of the traffic-free islands and endless opportunities for outdoor fun. Whether you’re into history or nature, Croatia has it all.

3. Slovenia

Why We Loved It:

  • Friendly, family-oriented locals
  • Delicious food and exceptional wine
  • Stunning landscapes
  • A variety of outdoor adventures
  • A perfect blend of city and nature experiences

Slovenia holds a special place in our hearts. From city escapes to countryside retreats, this small but mighty country has something for everyone. We stayed in a charming wine house, explored mountains and rivers, and even pitched in at a local vineyard.

Slovenian culture emphasises family and the land, making us feel instantly at home. The trails, natural spas, and hearty meals kept us coming back for more. It’s a destination we’ve visited multiple times and will undoubtedly return to again.

4. Hungary

Why We Loved It:

  • Budget-friendly travel
  • Efficient public transport
  • Allergy-friendly dining options
  • A mix of serene nature and vibrant city life
  • Unique attractions like Lake Balaton and Budapest’s spas

We spent six weeks in Hungary, with most of our time at Lake Balaton. This tranquil spot allowed us to relax, explore local towns, and enjoy kid-friendly beaches complete with playgrounds. Getting around was easy and affordable, whether by bike, bus, or train.

When we ventured to Budapest, we were amazed at how much we could do on a budget. From museums and river cruises to city spas, so many activities for all ages. As someone with gluten and dairy allergies, I was thrilled by the variety of dining options—a rare treat when travelling.

5. Menorca

Why We Loved It:

  • Perfect weather in late September
  • Clear waters filled with colourful fish
  • Quiet, uncrowded beaches
  • Scenic coastal trails
  • A relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere

Though shorter than our other trips, our two weeks in Menorca were unforgettable. We snorkeled in crystal-clear coves, hiked coastal trails, and practiced our Spanish (though most locals spoke excellent English). The island’s laid-back vibe made it easy to unwind, and the kids loved exploring the many beaches.

September was an ideal time to visit—quiet enough to avoid crowds but lively enough to enjoy everything the island had to offer. While Menorca was the most expensive of our destinations, its beauty and charm made it worth every penny.

Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or a longer family adventure, these five destinations offer the perfect mix of excitement, culture, and relaxation. Wherever you choose to go, your family’s next adventure is just around the corner. Bon voyage!
