Travelling with kids doesn’t mean giving up adventure — it just means packing a little smarter.
After years of worldschooling, wild hiking, and tracking down those tucked-away places that don’t show up on tourist maps, we’ve learned what gear actually earns its place in our backpacks. This isn’t one of those dreamy “maybe someday” wishlists. It’s a real-world guide built on muddy boots, mosquito bites, and those unforgettable moments that make family travel worth it.
Whether you’re heading for sandy beaches, rugged mountains, or a long-term journey with your crew, these family travel essentials will help you pack lighter, move freer, and stay ready for whatever comes your way.
If you haven’t already, check out our 10 Essential Items for Travelling with a Family — because let’s be honest, ten is never enough even for the most minimalist traveller. So here are the next 12 items to add to your backpack.
👶 1. Baby Wrap Sling — Hands-Free Travel Bliss

We’ve recently expanded the Almo crew, and our new wrap sling is a game-changer. In this photo our baby is a few days old, but these slings can be used until they are 18 months. It folds into a tiny pouch, is breathable and comfy for baby and adult, and is super easy to clean. More than that? It gives us freedom. Prams can limit your path, but a sling means we can hike trails, stroll old towns, and navigate airports hands-free. Every one of our kids has preferred being carried close, and this little bit of cloth makes it possible. To watch the video on how to wear the sling or to purchase CLICK HERE.
👟 2. Barefoot Trainers + Flip-Flops — The Only Shoes We Bring

Barefoot shoes are amazing for hikes, swims, beach walks, and even running. They dry quickly, pack flat, and double as water shoes. Add a pair of flip-flops for hot climates, and you’re set.
We follow a one-pair rule, and it works. Once, we extended our trip in Slovenia into autumn and just popped into a local shop to grab warm boots for the kids. Their feet were growing anyway, and it saved us from hauling extra pairs for months. Plus, it’s a whole new experience trying to find the right size with a language barrier.
Great for sunny hikes, seaside exploring, or just a quick wander. These kids’ sun hats protect delicate ears and necks and keep everyone cooler.
Plus, our kids think they look like jungle explorers — and we’re okay with that.
Over the years we have tried out so many different brands; My Top 3 favourites are Vivobarefoot (by far the most expensive, but so comfortable), Hobibear (look great, comfortable, not as quick drying for water shoes) and Saguaro (used to be a bargain, but popularity has put the prices up and we cans see why they are so comfortable, long lasting and quick drying).
👚 3. Quick-Drying Clothes — Rinse, Wring, Repeat
From tees to underwear, quick-dry clothing is a family travel secret weapon. No access to a dryer? No problem.
Even when we do find a machine, I can usually wash and hang-dry everything in under half an hour. These clothes keep us light and mobile.
For kids, you can’t go wrong with the Mountain Warehouse range, with each item costing around ÂŁ5, and the clothes are long-lasting, even for our son, who seems to wear through all clothes.

🌞 4. Long-Sleeve Swimwear — More Fun, Less Sunscreen
Our kids love their long-sleeved swim tops. They protect against sunburn, reduce sunscreen stress, and even help prevent rashes from bodyboards or sand.
Perfect for all-day beach days or watery adventures.

Available in 12 colours, go bright for water safety and for crowded places to make your children easier to spot. Don’t forget to keep yourself sun safe and comfortable for watersports.

🧴 5. Microfibre Towels — Small, Mighty, and Multi-Purpose
They dry quickly, pack down tiny, and double as a blanket, cover-up, or beach mat. These microfibre travel towels have been with us through oceans, rainstorms, and rivers.

🦟 6. Mosquito Repellent Bands — Bite-Free Evenings
Forget sticky sprays. We use natural oil repellent bands (like the Bear Grylls ones), and they’ve worked wonders.
We’ve watched other travellers scratch away at bites while we stayed mostly untouched, and smelling surprisingly nice!

🧥 7. Lightweight Waterproofs + Fleece Layers — Be Weather-Ready
Compact and cosy. These layering essentials are perfect for sudden storms, chilly nights, or misty mornings on the trail. Everyone stays warm, dry, and happy. My husband loves these ponchos. I have to say I used to laugh at him, but the number of times I used to hide under it, sit on it if the ground was wet, and because it’s so easy to pack, it means you can always have it available. I am now a proud owner of my own poncho!!

✨ 8. Travel Toiletries: Moisturiser + Electric Toothbrush
Not technically outdoorsy, but after a salty beach day or dusty hike, a rich moisturiser is heavenly. And after too many moments of our electric toothbrush mysteriously buzzing inside a backpack, we never travel without a proper travel case.

📝 9. Notebook & Pencils — Memory Makers
Our kids draw, sketch, and jot down adventures. We write plans, feelings, day journals and travel tips. These simple tools help everyone feel grounded, connected, and creative on the road.
Plus, looking back through old travel notes? Pure gold.

🔋 10. Compact Solar Charger — Stay Connected Off-Grid
Whether we’re camping, travelling remotely, or just forgot to charge overnight, our solar charger keeps devices alive.
Bonus: It’s a lifeline for running an online business while on the move and we’ve had multiple times where the extra torch has come in handy too.

🩹 11. Mini First Aid Kit — Little Scrapes, Big Peace of Mind
Scratches, stings, headaches — they happen. Ours includes wipes, plasters, tweezers, and any meds our kids might need. Oh, and a little “bravery chocolate or sticker” — because it helps.

🍿 12. Silicone Snack Bags — Eco-Friendly and Endlessly Handy
These reusable snack bags hold trail mix, sea glass, leftover pastries, or Lego pieces. Better than plastic, and tougher too. We use them every single day.

đź’¬ Final Thoughts: Travel Light, Live Big
We don’t carry much, but what we do carry matters. This gear helps us stay connected, curious, and calm wherever the journey takes us.
Whether you’re gearing up for a year-long worldschooling adventure or just planning a long weekend in the woods, we hope this list makes your trip lighter, simpler, and a little more outdoor.
