Wireless Mics: Why Do You Need a Receiver?

Discover why most wireless lapel mics need a receiver, how RF and Bluetooth models compare, and the best options for quality audio in your recordings.

Can’t I just connect my lapel mic with Bluetooth?

If you’re looking for a wireless lapel microphone (otherwise known as a lavalier mic), you might have noticed that most models require a receiver plugged into your phone or recording device. This can seem like an unnecessary extra step, especially when we have Bluetooth technology that allows wireless connections without additional hardware. So why do most wireless lapel mics use a separate receiver instead of connecting directly via Bluetooth? Bluetooth mics do exist but let’s find out the right option for you.

Quick Answer

If you are looking for something that does both, the DJI mic will connect to your phone or device or a receiver.

Analogue vs Digital

Requiring a receiver depends on whether your microphones transmit audio digitally or analogue.

Analogue Microphones use a radio frequency (usually ultra-high frequency) transmission, and require a receiver that manually plugs into your recording device. Much the same way an old-fashioned radio picks up signals and converts them into sound without the need for a computer or chip.

Digital Microphones can work independently by connecting directly to your phone using Bluetooth.

N.B. Even though Bluetooth uses radio waves as well (2.4ghz, the same as WiFi to be exact), the sound transmitted via Bluetooth is digital; the audio signal is encoded and transmitted as a stream of digital data, though it is ultimately converted back to an analogue signal by the receiving device before being played. This is called DAC (Digital-to-Analogue-Conversion)

This means there are pros and cons of Radio based and Bluetooth mics that should be considered before buying.

(Analogue) Radio Frequency Wireless Mics

Most professional wireless lapel microphones operate on RF frequencies, often in the UHF or sometimes even 2.4 GHz range. They require a transmitter (built into the mic) and a separate receiver (plugged into your recording device) to function.

Pros:

  • Better Audio Quality – RF transmission is optimised for high-quality, low-latency audio.
  • Lower Latency – Audio is transmitted almost instantaneously, making it ideal for live broadcasts and video recording.
  • Better Connection – Dedicated RF transmission is less prone to interference compared to Bluetooth.
  • Longer Range – RF mics often have a range of up to 100m or more, compared to Bluetooth’s 10-30m limit.
  • Compatibility – Because the receiver plugs in manually, you can use it with any device that has an audio plug-in like a high-quality camera like a digital SLR
  • Duel Mic compatible

Cons:

  • Requires a Receiver – The need for an extra device can be inconvenient.
  • More Expensive – High-quality RF wireless mics tend to be pricier than Bluetooth models.
  • Possible Frequency Interference – Some frequency bands can experience interference from other wireless devices.
  • Adapters-some receivers require Adapters to plug into devices such as Apple, Android or usb-c or headphone jacks. Not only is this more cumbersome, but it adds more connectivity risks.

Notes to consider

  • UHF is usually better quality than 2.4 GHz or Bluetooth, but some countries have rules about certain frequencies (Read UK OFCOM rules here)
  • Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz may experience interference from Wifi heavy areas.

(Digital) Bluetooth Wireless Mics

Some lapel microphones now offer direct Bluetooth connectivity, allowing them to pair with phones, tablets, or computers without the need for a separate receiver.

Pros:

  • No Extra Receiver Needed – Simplifies setup and reduces the number of accessories to carry.
  • More Affordable – Bluetooth mics are generally cheaper than RF models.
  • Works with Many Devices – Easily pairs with smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Cons:

  • Lower Audio Quality – Bluetooth compresses audio, which can reduce clarity and depth.
  • Higher Latency – There can be noticeable delays in audio transmission, which may cause sync issues in video recording.
  • Shorter Range – Limited to around 10-30 meters, depending on obstacles.
  • More Susceptible to Interference – Bluetooth operates in the crowded 2.4 GHz range, which can lead to dropouts.

Recommended Bluetooth Wireless Lapel Mics:

Please note prices will vary depending on included bundle items like wire mics, windjammers, stands, adapters, chargers, carry cases, and additional mics

  • SabineTek SmartMike+ – A compact, high-quality Bluetooth mic for mobile content creation.
  • Shure MV88+ – Great for iOS users needing a professional-grade Bluetooth mic.
  • Comica BoomX-D – A versatile and affordable Bluetooth option for vloggers that supports Analogue and digital (radio and bluetooth.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you’re a content creator, filmmaker, or professional needing the best audio quality and reliability, an RF wireless lapel mic with a receiver is the better choice. However, if you’re looking for a simple, casual solution for vlogging, video calls, or quick recordings, a Bluetooth mic might be a convenient and cost-effective option.

Best of both worlds

Understanding these differences can help you pick the right microphone for your needs. Whether you choose an RF system with a receiver or a direct Bluetooth mic, both have their place in the world of wireless audio!
