Whether your family loves outdoor adventures, cultural discoveries, or simply relaxing in nature, Slovenia has something for everyone.

Our Love for Slovenia

We love Slovenia so much that we’ve visited seven times! Normally, we love discovering new places, but this country keeps pulling us back for more. Each trip has been completely different, from adrenaline-filled adventures to slow-paced vineyard stays. One of our most memorable visits was a six-week stopover during the grape harvest at my parents’ vineyard. This is such a magical time of year when locals gather to pick grapes, share home-cooked feasts, and celebrate with live music and, of course, an endless supply of wine. If you visit in September, heading to the Jeruzalem region for this experience is an absolute must!

Must-Visit Family Destinations in Slovenia

Thermal Spas – A Perfect Family Treat

After all that hard work in the vineyard, we treated ourselves to Slovenia’s famous thermal spas! Scattered across the country, these natural hot springs are perfect for relaxation and fun. Our top picks are:

We love all of these thermal spas. My daughter even taught herself to swim at Terme Banovci they have a range of facilities including pools at different temperatures, designated areas for children and delicious food. All you need for a relaxing break.

Maribor – Winter & Summer Adventures

Maribor is a fantastic destination for families, whether you’re visiting in winter for skiing or in summer for hiking, mountain biking, and thrilling alpine slides. Take the cable car up the mountain, explore the stunning landscapes, and then enjoy the vibrant city life with great food, scenic riverside walks, and plenty of kid-friendly activities.

Lake Bled – A Fairytale Escape

Lake Bled is Slovenia’s most famous destination, and it’s easy to see why! With its picturesque island, medieval castle, and stunning views, it feels like stepping into a storybook. We love swimming in the lake, renting a boat to row to the island, cycling around the shoreline, and indulging in the delicious food. If you’re looking for a great place to stay, Alp Pension is a fantastic choice for families. While many tourists spend their entire trip in Bled, we highly recommend exploring beyond it to get a deeper, more authentic feel of Slovenia. For a special meal, Vila Preseren is a must-visit!

Soteska Vintgar – A Stunning Gorge Walk

One of the most breathtaking walks we’ve ever done! This easy yet spectacular trail winds through a dramatic gorge with crystal-clear water below. We visited in October and had the place almost to ourselves – pure magic! At the end of the walk, be sure to stop at Gostilna Vintgar, a fantastic local restaurant where the menu depends on the fresh catch of the day.

Ljubljana – Slovenia’s Charming Capital

Slovenia’s capital is one of the prettiest and most family-friendly cities we’ve explored. Ljubljana Castle offers incredible views, the old town is packed with lively cafes and street performers, and the riverside is perfect for a relaxing stroll. If your family loves history and fairytale-like cities, Ljubljana won’t disappoint! Plus, it’s a great base for exploring other parts of Slovenia and even taking day trips to neighbouring countries.

Triglav National Park has endless trails, and the Postojna and Škocjan Caves are fantastic underground adventures!

2. Delicious Food & Wine (for the Parents!)

Slovenia’s food scene is a delightful mix of Alpine, Mediterranean, and Balkan flavours. Some must-try dishes include štruklji (rolled dumplings), jota (hearty soup), and čevapčiči (grilled sausages) – all kid-approved! And let’s not forget the wine – Slovenia has incredible wineries, especially in the Vipava Valley and Styria regions, offering top-quality wines at great prices.
